Joey Kamide: My Bio

My Bio

I was born on January 24, 1979 on the U.S. Army Base in Landstuhl, Germany and his family eventually settled in Northern Virginia, where he attended Herndon High School and George Mason University.

My two passions since a young age have been baseball and sports journalism, and I have participated in and absorbed the game of baseball over 30+ years as a player, fan, member of the media, coach, and an ambassador of sorts during recent stints living in Europe.

As a member of the sports media industry, I've spent over two decades in various roles: as a newspaper reporter and editor for The Observer Newspapers, the Times Community Newspapers and The Connection Newspapers; a freelance writer for the Associated Press' bureau in Washington, D.C., a sports-talk radio personality and high school basketball and football commentator; and most-recently as the founder and editor of the NOVA Baseball Magazine.

I was the editor-in-chief of my high high school newspaper, the sports editor of my college paper, interned at The Washington Post, and have won several Virginia Press Association awards for sports feature and column writing. Some highlights during my time in sports media include interviewing the likes of Ken Griffey, Jr., Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine while writing for the AP, and Redskins greats such as Darrell Green, Charles Mann, Chris Samuels and Charley Taylor while co-hosting "The Coaches Corner" radio show.

In addition, I've served as the public relations coordinator for the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League and produced media guides as a fundraiser for high school sports programs and highlight videos for individual players and teams.

On the field, I've coached at the travel, high school, summer collegiate and international levels. I was as an assistant at James Madison, Centreville and Oakton high schools for 10 seasons, and with the FCA Herndon Braves of the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League for two summers. I served as a head coach with multiple travel programs - most-recently for several years with the Marucci Stars - and spent time overseas as a coach and recruiter with the Hungarian National Baseball and Softball Federation and the head coach of Tempo Titans Praha of the Czech Baseball Association. In my one season in Prague, I coached the club to a 26-4 record in CBA play, a second-division national championship and a promotion to the first division, known as the Extraliga.

In addition to his work in sports media, I have worked in commercial and residential sales for My Guys Moving & Stroage in Northern Virginia, for athletics services and teen services with the Fairfax County Government in Virginia, and for many years as a bartender and bouncer at The Auld Shebeen Irish Pub & Restaurant in Fairfax, VA. When I'm not working, you'll likely find me woodworking, working out, reading a good book, watching the Washington Redskins (they'll always be the Redskins to me!) and Boston Celtics, taking road trips, hiking, or spending time with my family.
